6 DIFFERENT FEMALE BODY SHAPES.. .
You are what you wear. And what you wear depends on your body shape. This is something many ladies simply don’t know. There is a lot of science behind body shape and dressing especially when it comes to making a style statement.
Every woman is beautiful and unique but hey! It feels good when you know your body shape as a woman and you are rocking the perfect kind of clothes in other to give you the 'wow' look, the 'Oh my God' kind of attention and the 'oh yeah' kind of feeling. So what are you waiting for??? Keep reading to find out the six (6) different female body shapes as well as what to wear and what not to wear.
1. Apple/Inverted body shape: A woman with this shape has broader shoulders, a large bust, narrow hips, slim legs, flat bottom. Fat is mainly distributed in the abdomen, chest, and face.
So, your main style aims are to create the illusion of the perfect hourglass body shape by balancing your lower body to your upper body and to draw attention away from your upper body.
What to wear:
Wear soft, textured fabrics; satin, denim and tweed fabrics that creates interest on the lower body, A-line dresses/skirts and flared pants (trousers), shirts with a tie below the bust line, tops that fall lower than the hip bone (tops that flow through the waist) , tops with cuff sleeves, well-fitting clothes, flowing fabrics, V necklines, three-quarter length sleeves and a well-adjusted bra. Also, wear necklaces that come till your bust and not lower or higher, short dresses, well-defined shouldered blazers, summer jackets, waistcoats, boot-cut jeans, jeans with back pockets to give more definition to your hips, low waist jeans. Then you can define your waist by wearing high-waisted shorts, heels, sandals with straps, wedges, and platform shoes.
What not to wear:
Avoid bulky fabrics and shapless styles that will emphasize your shoulders, high necklines, big collars shirts, tight skirts and pants (trouser).
2. Banana/Ruler/Straight body shape : This body shape is also known as the rectangular body shape or the supermodel body shape. A female with this figure has a small/medium bust, slender arms and legs. Most times, the hip has the same width as the waist and also emphasizing a flat bottom. Your main style aims are to add curves by defining your shoulder, hips and your waist.
What to wear:
Wear tube tops and dresses that highlights your features. You can also wear bright colors, try different textures, and cuts. Wear semi-fitted clothes, short-sleeves and sleeve-less tops and dresses if you don’t have a very small upper arm. Wear medium to high necklines dresses, dresses that wrap or flow through the waistline, straight to gently flared flat-fronted pants (trousers) and A-line shirts.
What not to wear :
Avoid clingy fabrics and fitted clothes because they will make you look very straight. Low necklines will emphasize on your flat bust so avoid them. Also avoid baggy tops and baggy pants (trousers).
3. Pear/Bell body shape : This is also known as the triangle body shape. A female with this shape has a round, heavy bottom with a defined waist but hip size are always wider than the bust and shoulders. Short legs with full thigh are common characteristics. Your style aim is to balance her top half to bottom half by creating the appearance of a wider upper body.
What to wear :
Wear gorgeous accessories and bright fabrics with designs to draw attention to your upper body, short-sleeved tops, shoulder pads to broaden your shoulder, medium to high necklines, garments to emphasize your waist, skirts and dresses that are straight or slightly flared, low rise pants to avoid gaping at the waist, boot leg and straight pants (trouser). Also, wear a pushup bra or a padded bra to make your upper body and lower body look balanced.
What not to wear :
Avoid balloon dresses or baggy garments that add bulk to your hips. Also avoid cigarette kind of pants and skirts.
4. Hourglass body shape : This is a curvy female with the hips and bust of the same width which emphasizes a defined waist. Your main style aims are to emphasize your curves, especially your waist, without adding bulk.
What to wear :
Wear fitted and semi-fitted clothes, soft, clingy, flowing fabrics, low to medium-low necklines, dresses with defined waistlines, straight and gently flared pants, straight and gently flared shirts. Adorn your waist with broad belt to flatter your figure and also wear well-fitting tops, fitting jackets, tops or dresses with pleated waist, pencil skirts, ¾ skirts with side or back slits, jeggings, boots, strappy sandals, high heels, peep toes, and necklaces that fall till your navel.
What not to wear :
Avoid bulky, fabrics and baggy styles as well as loose tops because they will hide your figure.
5. Rounded/Oval body shape : Just as the name implies, females with this body shape should focus on drawing attention upwards towards the shoulders and face.
What to wear:
Wear ear-rings, necklaces that and other focal points designed to draw an observer's eyes up towards your shoulders and face. Wear semi-fitted and loose fitting clothings, very fitted bras and support under wear to minimise your stomach. Tops and bottoms in the same colours are better worn, low necklines, un-tucked tops that does not emphasize the rounded stomach, tops and dresses that flow through the waistline and straight pants in soft, flowing fabric are a good choice. Wear square neck, V-neck, and U-neck tops or shirts. You should also wear wrap around tops, skirts, and jackets to slim down your mid-body area, vertical stripes, peplum tops, tunic tops, belted dresses and tops, wide collared jackets, fish-cut or flared skirts, cargo pants with pockets near your hip, empire waisted dresses or tops, dresses or skirts just above your knee to show off your legs and make you look well proportioned and high heels.
What not to wear :
Avoid clingy fabrics, tight fitted clothes, fabric with large patterns, high necklines, tucked-in tops, pleat skirts because they add more volume to your figure. Avoid wearing narrow jeans or trousers, loose fitting tops, wide stripes, ruffles, pleated skirts, baggy jackets, tight t-shirts, turtle necks, cardigans, chunky earrings and necklaces, round toed shoes, heavy boots, and flats.
6. Diamond body shape : A female with a diamond shaped body has broad hips and a narrow bust which is in alignment with the shoulders. Your midsection looks full like the oval shaped body. You tend to gain weight around the stomach and your waist isn’t well-defined. You have a little more weight in the upper legs. Your arms are also slender and well shaped. The lower legs are shaped well and they happen to be your body’s most beautiful feature.
What to wear:
The key to dressing well would be by creating a wonderful balance with your bust. This will make the waist look lovely. You could also look for those clothes that have curves. You can go for pants and skirts that will make you look slimmer. Since you have sexy lower legs, make an effort to show them off! Wear belted tops and dresses, flowy cuff sleeve tops that flow around the buttocks, fluttered sleeves, dark jeans or trousers, off-shoulder or strapless tops, A-line and straight skirts, boot cut and straight cut trousers, well-structured shouldered jackets and shirts, wide belts, chunky earrings and necklaces, medium high heels, and wedges.
What not to wear :
Avoid pencil skirts or narrow trousers and jeans, big prints, gaudy embellished tops, vertical patterns and prints, thick scarves that sit around your neck, and heavy boots.
